KFFL.com Breaks Down Chiefs QB Battle

Brodie Croyle vs. Damon Huard | Kansas City Chiefs

The departure of Trent Green to the Miami Dolphins has created an interesting positional battle for quarterback in Kansas City. Green missed most of last season due to injury, and Huard was effective in his absence, finishing the season with 1,878 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and one interception.

Despite Huard’s solid numbers last season, he’s 34 years old, and Chiefs head coach Herman Edwards has said he would like to develop a new, young quarterback to fit into the Chiefs’ offensive scheme. While Huard filled in admirably for Green in 2006, his age is a serious detriment to assuming the starting role. Considering the substantial reps and playing time Croyle has seen thus far in training camp, he appears a sure bet to become the team’s starting quarterback, possibly even by the beginning of the season. Croyle’s lack of experience makes him a dubious pick for fantasy owners, as does Huard’s likely relegation to a backup role. Consider Croyle just a fantasy reserve at this point. Should Huard somehow earn the starting role, he would rank as a low-end No. 2 or high-end No. 3 quarterback entering the season.

PROJECTED WINNER: Croyle is expected to win the job.
