Cheifs Working Towards Opener with Cuts in Mind

The Chiefs continued their fully-padded workouts yesterday as running back Larry Johnson continued trying to work out a deal. Quarterback Damon Huard spend much of the day with an ice-pack on his sore calf, as Brodie Croyle worked with the first-team offense. And Priest Holmes continued doing his practice drills, but only the ones that don’t require a helmet. The rules specify that, as soon as Priest puts one on, he’s no longer on the “physically unable to perform” list. Herm Edwards says Holmes is not quite ready for that yet.
After Thursday night’s game against the New Orleans Saints, the Chiefs will have to cut 13 guys from the squad. Edwards says that’s probably the hardest thing a head coach has to do. Rookie tight end Michael Allan probably won’t have to worry, though. Edwards says Allan — the seventh-round pick from Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington — may not have an impressive physique. In fact, he compares him to the character Lumpy from “Leave It to Beaver”. But, Edwards says, Allan finds a way to get open and catch the football, and he tends not to repeat mistakes.
