Chiefs and Johnson Agree to 5-Year Deal

The Chiefs and Larry Johnson are finally getting along. After a couple of back and forth weeks of bickering, the two sides have come to terms on a new 6-year deal worth $45 million. Johnson was absent from Chiefs camp since it kicked off, and went back and forth with the club about wanting a new deal. He was on the field at camp Tuesday, and even took a swing pass from Brodie Croyle and raced down the sidelines, much to the delight of his teammates. “It was a long, hard negotiation,” general manager Carl Peterson said, according to AP. “We are very happy to have all our children in camp now.”

The contract extension with KC will keep him in red through the 2012 season — the extension plus the year remaining on his old contract. Johnson is guaranteed $19 million according to the Kansas City Star, and will make $27.7 million over the first three years of his deal. The back was fined more than $19,000 per day that he missed of camp. He broke the Chiefs single-season rushing record in each of the last two seasons, and last year set a league record with 416 carries. He rushed for 1,789 yards.

Despite being at camp now, Johnson is not expected to be on the field playing this week as the Chiefs host the New Orleans Saints Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium. “He is in really good shape and we’ll check it out more thoroughly but I have been monitoring his progress,” Peterson said of Johnson. “I think people already know that he was down in Arizona working very hard. I got a scouting report from Brady Quinn who was down there with him when he was out of camp. But again, Larry Johnson is very important to this organization. I think he knows that, his family knows that and we’re glad he’s going to be here – perhaps for the remainder of his career. I hope it goes beyond six years.”
