Opening Day not a For Sure for Larry Johnson

JohnsonLarry Johnson is talking now that he and KC have a deal in place, as the franchise back talked at Chiefs camp Wednesday and to some observers surprise, stated he might not be totally ready to run the rock a lot on opening day.  “Obviously, coaches are going to do a great job trying to get me on track to where week two or week three of the season I can hit my full stride,” he said. “I’m going to try pick up as fast as I can.”  This can not be good news for KC, as despite the long holdout, there are for sure counting on Johnson to be on the field for the season opener.

It could be Johnson just be playing the role, and making it sound like he won’t be ready when he really will be.  Last season he was in camp the whole time, running the ball 20 times in the preseason for 75 yards.  Then on opening day he was the workhorse, rushing 17 times for 68 yards in a 23-10 loss.  Week two he ran the ball 27 times for 126 yards in a 9-6 loss in Denver.  Johnson has been working out in Arizona and so far looks in great shape, so this again might just be a case of Johnson downplaying his condition as the season nears.

“What I know about myself is I’ve never been a fast starter coming out of the blocks in a season,” he said. “I’ve always been — the last eight games is when I really turn it on. So I’m going to push myself as hard as I can to try to even it out.”  Money is that Johnson will be on the field – ready to go, and will get 15-20 carries right off the bat in Texas against Houston.  “It all depends on how I’m feeling. Of course, the adrenaline takes over,” he said. “You’re excited about playing. So we’ll see. It all depends on what type of game we’ll get ourselves into. It will come in due time. My legs are as fresh as can be right now. It will all help me when it comes to the last week of the season.”
