The Chiefs sit at number five in April’s NFL Draft, and one player that may fall in their lap if they want him could be the very player that shined the most at this past weekends NFL Combine in Indianapolis – running back Darren McFadden. Now why the Chiefs would need a running back is anyone’s guess with Larry Johnson in the fold with a long-term deal, but yet President Carl Peterson gave props today to the soon-to-be franchise back. . “He’s a game-changing talent,” said Kansas City president Carl Peterson. “He helped himself a lot today … if he’s at No. 5 overall, I’m going to have to consider him long and hard. … And I have a great running back [Larry Johnson].”
Now what does all this mean? It could be just a President making a statement about a player that is slated to be a great back in the NFL. Or it could be a forshadowing of things to come for Kansas City, as there is a chance they very well may have McFadden sitting there at number five. Can the Chiefs pass on McFadden if he’s available? And what’s the deal with L.J.’s injury that hampered him last season? Is he back to 100 percent?
Last season after a nasty holdout, Johnson played in just eight games, and with the Chiefs O-line in a total flux, the back ran for just 559 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 3.5 yards per carry. This from a back that the season before ran for 1789 yards and 17 touchdowns, and 1750 yards and 20 TD’s the season before. It will be plenty interesting to see what route the Chiefs take based on this if McFadden is available at five come Draft Day.
