Surtian

Patrick Surtain’s cap number for 2008 is over eight million dollars. That is two million more than the next highest player paid player on the Chiefs roster Brian Waters. Surtain?s stat line for last year 61 tackles and two interceptions. To put that in perspective the Chiefs paid Jarrod Page 400,000 for 64 tackles and three interceptions. To make matters worse for # 23 he is starting to show his age. He can no longer shut down the big time receivers. Can?t keep up with the fast receivers.. Last year the Chiefs had to scheme their entire defense around the slow feet of Ty Law and Surtain. The red and gold know they will take a big salary cap hit if they release him but they will not be on the hook for the entire 8 mill. It could be addition by subtraction the team has a stable of young cornerbacks including two draft picks looking for playing time.

Herm Edwards believes he has his replacements in draft picks Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr. Flowers was a projected first round talent but slid in the draft to the early second round. Carr has been slightly more impressive in the OTA?s and is already more well versed in the cover two than Flowers. Both players are going to play a lot but if you keep Surtain. The time the draft picks spend on the bench while he plays is very counter productive for the future of the Chiefs they are not going to the big game this year and even if they were Surtain would not be the missing piece. If the Chiefs wanted to get a veteran presence in the backfield to mentor the young DB?s they should probably look else where. Surtain has never been spoke of as much of a leader in the club house. Bottom line the more and more you break it down there is no good reason to keep him on the team.
