Chiefs vs. Patriots Post Game Gab

In the shocker that almost was the Kansas City Chiefs fell to the New England Patriots 17-10 in Foxboro. From the very get go the Chiefs had every thing falling their way. After holding the Pats to a punt on their opening drive rookie Brandon Flowers got flagged for running into the kicker.

With a new set of downs quarterback Tom Brady found Wes Welker with a pass that was knocked loose by cornerback Pat Surtain and recovered by safety Jarrod Page. After the Chiefs went three and out Brady and the Pats were back at it. With a first a ten from the KC 42 Brady went deep for Moss down the right sideline, as Brady released the pass he was injured by safety Bernard Pollard who came blitzing in and caught Brady in the knee.

The pass was completed to Moss at the KC 14 Moss subsequently fumbled the catch which was recovered by cornerback Brandon Carr. Brady would not return in the game. After another stalled drive backup quarterback Matt Cassel came in and hit Randy Moss for a 51 yard pass play to dig New England out of some poor field position. Later in that drive Cassel would again find Moss, this time for a ten yard touchdown reception. The Chiefs responded with a late field goal going into half down 7-3.

The opening drive of the second half saw QB Brodie Croyle sustained a injury being reported as a shoulder separation. On the ensuing drive New England drove down the field on a 11 play six minute drive led by Matt Cassel that culminated in a five yard Sammy Morris touchdown.

Down 14-3 veteran quarterback Damon Huard efficiently took the Chiefs down the field finding Dwayne Bowe for 13 yard touchdown pass. The defense stepped up in the fourth quarter holding the Pats to only one field goal after they received extremely good field positions on three consecutive drives. With the defense keeping it a one possession game the Chiefs got one last shot with the ball and 2:26 left. After only advancing 5 yards in a little over a minute the Chiefs looked dead in the water.

Then on 2nd and 16 Huard hit Devard Darling for a 68 yard gain to the NE 5. But with four shots at the end zone Huard and the Chiefs could not find pay dirt. The Patriots took possession and kneeled the ball to end the game. With nobody on their schedule as talented as New England except for the Chargers the Chiefs young players learned that they can run with anybody in this league today.

The Three positives

1. Branden Albert and Brandon Flowers: These two rookies came into the game starting at left tackle and cornerback. The most important positions in football save quarterback. If you watched the game or listened on the radio you did not hear their name called often which is big positive. Bill Belichick had all preseason to game plan and exploit these young players and he could not do it. If you can pass the Belichick test you can pass most test in the NFL.

2. Jamal Charles: Former track star current lighting rod to go with Larry Johnson?s thunder storms. Charles averaged over five yards a carry on five carries and caught a couple of passes looking like he has the makings of a elite third down back. The Chiefs will need that they will have their fair share of third downs this season.

3: Special teams are improved: While kicker Nick Novak was not asked to do much he did make his only field goal try of the day and punter Dustin Colquit consistently nailed the Pats inside the 20. Return man Dontrell Savage looked exciting and hard to tackle and while he did not break a long one you could see that the potential is there. Only one real mistake for the special teams a long kick return by Ellis Hobbs.

The Three Negatives

1. L.J. still can?t find daylight: Larry Johnson had a decent day with 22 carries for 74 yards. If you take away his 22 yard run those stats don?t look as good. The Chiefs have to find a way to get L.J. going. He is the straw that stirs the offensive cup for the Chiefs. Without L.J. running wild our passing game will suffer. On the bright side for the Chiefs the Pat had one of the top two or three rush defenses the Chiefs will see.

2. Tony G and D-Bowe can?t find the football:
Both players had over 5 cathes and 50 yards receiving but the Chiefs had several opprotunitys to get a head in this game and could not find either player for big gains. The Patriots were focused in on stopping L.J. The Chiefs should have been able to fid a way to get these big time players the ball. Bowe did haul in a touchdown but also had a couple of drops. Tony G caught everything thrown at him, he just did not see enough passes come his way.

3. Brodie Croyle can?t escape his past: In what is being reported as a shoulder seperation. Brodie Croyle is likely to miss some serious time with this injury. Croyle was supposed to be the quarterback of the future the knock on him has always been his ability to stay healthy. Today he did not silence any of his critics and now the Chiefs head into a uncertain future with Damon Huard at QB. If Croyle is out long term one possibility is QB Chris Simms son of Phil Simms.

The chiefs need to stop messing around with Croyle and Huard, not to mention Thygpen, and sign Quinn Gray. No he’s not great, but neither is any of our current QB’s. He’s young and athletic and can actually move if he sees somebody coming at him istead of just stand there.

Whoever wrote this article needs to go back to school or at least learn how to use spell check. There are almost as many spelling errors in the 2nd paragraph of the “The Three Negatives” section as there are actual words. Come on man, if you expect someone to take your opinions seriously, learn how to write properly!
