Are Larry Johnson and Tony Gonzalez Damaged Goods Now?

The trade deadline came and went and the much speculated Tony-G trade never came to fruition. That is what was expected to happen for two reasons, 1.. Carl Peterson drafted Tony and in the age of free agency has managed to keep him in K.C. That is quite a accomplishment and Carl is aware of his achievements and his legacy.

Carl was not going to be the guy who traded maybe the greatest Chief of all time. 2. The other reason Tony was not traded is the Chiefs and more specifically Carl Peterson want to keep selling games out. Chiefs Nation was split half and half on whether to send Tony to a title contender or keep him in red and gold. The Chiefs could ill afford to lose any more of their fan base and keep their heads above water in ticket sales.

The most interesting story to be taken from the Chiefs trade deadline attempts is the fact that they once again put Larry Johnson on the trade block. Of course with his perceived bad attitude and even worse contract there were no takers for the running back. The question for the Chiefs becomes with a low probability of trading him why stoke the L.J. fires?

The Chiefs are struggling with consistency and finally had appeared to get L.J. going, after he questioned his role on the team he had a couple of 100 yard games and looked to be back on track. With the Chiefs throwing Larry out there in trade talks it will either end up dropping L.J.?s morale faster than the stock market, or Larry will use this slap in the face as motivation.

Once the Chiefs let it be known that they were actively pursuing trades they should have made sure they were willing to get the deal done. This Chiefs roster is littered with young players and the Chiefs should not have risked sending two players back into the locker room that could now become potential problems.

Tony will come to work every day and do his job, but it is hard to imagine his relationship with the Chiefs ever returning to where it once was after requesting a trade. Even if Gonzalez goes through the motions of his job and says all the right things, his attitude and body language positive or negative will have a trickle down effect throughout the locker room.
