Chiefs vs. Titans Pre Game Gab

One of the most dysfunctional weeks in Kansas City history is coming to a close, but the damage has been done. Larry Johnson the teams most prolific offensive weapon picked up another assault charge and managed to get deactivated for this weeks game against the Titans for missing a team meeting.

Tony Gonzalez the best tight end in NFL history is upset he was not traded and now appears to have a rocky relationship with the Chiefs front office, mainly Carl Peterson who told Tony G he would appease his wish if he could get a third rounder for his services. The Packers offered the Chiefs the pick they were looking for but Carl went back on his word and did not trade Tony G. Not to be overshadowed by Tony G and L.J. Napoleon Harris last years big free agent signing also managed to get some headlines for the first time all season by getting released.

With the Titans bringing their undefeated record to Arrowhead the Chiefs could not have picked a worse time to start self imploding. Brodie Croyle has to be feeling the worst of all the Chiefs players. After being out with a injury since the first week of the season, he only had three real weapons heading into the game and now he looks to be down to 1 ½ legitimate weapons at best.

One positive note for Croyle is he will be getting his starting left tackle back as Branden Albert makes his return from injury. Albert will give the Chiefs some options if Damion Mcintosh falters in the game then he can be replaced by Herb Taylor on the right side who filled in well for the injured Albert. The Chiefs will need all the O-line help they can get as the Titans bring a dominant defense to town , a defense which was headed up by Albert Haynesworth who is in the top five in the AFC in sacks.

One match up that looks favorable for the Chiefs is their defense against the Titans offense, Vince Young has not made his way back to the starting lineup since his breakdown during the first game of the season. Since that time Kerry Collins has led the offense and the game plan has been to run as much as possible with Lendale White and Chris Johnson and play low risk offense. The Titans have no real weapons in the passing game. Bo Scaife and Justin Gage are their leading receivers, neither player average over 50 yards a game receiving. Despite their lack of star power the Titans offense has proven they can put points on the board having already scored 30 points in two games this season, mostly relying on their defense to put them in a position to score with turnovers and good field position.

Keys to the game

Keep Brodie?s jersey clean:
Nobody wants to see their quarterback take a pounding, but the Chiefs may have the most fragile quarterback in the league in Brodie Croyle. Over these last eleven games of the season Brodie will be evaluated and may be on borrowed time till next april?s draft. He will need his line to step up in a big way for him not only against this ferocious D-line, but during following weeks as well if he is to get a fair evaluation. The Chiefs will also need to bring back the rollout and play action passing part of the playbook to keep the Titans defense on their toes if the are to keep Brodie standing and in one piece.

Give Tennessee a long field to work with: This one is simple the Titans offense capitalizes on turnovers and their defense pinning offenses deep in their own territory for field position. The Titans can run downhill with their thunder and lighting running back combination when they have a short field to work with, but when the Titans have been asked to go 80 yards with the ball is when they have struggled. The Chiefs cannot play into the Titans hand by turning the ball over and giving them the short field they are so successful with. All three phases of the game will have to be clicking to accomplish this task.

Find a way to run the football: If running the ball against the Titans was not hard enough the Chiefs will have to do it without all pro running back Larry Johnson who will be deactivated for this game. The Chiefs will be asking rookie third round pick Jamal Charles and second year back Kolby Smith to step up and take L.J.?s place in the lineup. The Chiefs may have caught a break on this one, running back is considered the deepest position on this team. Charles has only a small body of work so far this season while Kolby did have a 181 yard game against the Raiders last year filling in for Johnson.

Injury Report:

TE: J.P.Foschi- Foot, questionable

LB: Donnie Edwards- Ankle, questionable

Titans Report:

WR: Justin McCareins- Hamstring, questionable

DT: Tony Brown- Ankle, questionable

DE: Kyle Vanden Bosch- Groin, questionable

Weather Report: The temperature in K.C. will be 62 degrees at kickoff with a southerly breeze at 22 mph

Final Score: Chiefs 10 Titans 19

It would not be totally inconceivable for the Chiefs to steal a upset here similar to the Broncos game, but in his 15th season with the Titans head coach Jeff Fisher has been to one too many Rodeos to let his undefeated team look past this struggling Chiefs squad. Expect both teams to attempt to establish the run in the first half keeping the score close, but the Titans will be the ones who are able two wear down the opposing defense in the second half eventually pulling away.
