Chiefs vs. Jets Post Game Gab

Big catch for the Jets
After playing one of their most complete games of the seasons, the Chiefs undoubtedly will be scratching their heads asking “what if” as they leave the Meadow lands in a game they could have easily won losing to the Jets 28-24 on a Brett Favre touchdown pass with 1:05 left in the game.

The most impressive aspect of the game may have been how the Chiefs rebounded in the game even after they gave up a early touchdown something they have struggled to do this season. Once again in the second quarter after pulling even at 7-7 they had the wind knocked out of their sails after Leon Washington ‘s 60 yard touch down scamper.

This Chiefs team today was determined to stay in the contest after falling behind 14-7 they answered right back on the very next drive led by a calm and collected Tyler Thigpen as he took the Chiefs down the field 76 yards with a 1:48 left executing the two minute offense perfectly culminating in a 11 yard touchdown pass to Mark Bradley with 4 seconds left in the half.

The pass was Thigpen’s second touchdown pass of the half. Thigpen would help the Chiefs get their first lead since the Broncos game taking the Chiefs down for a field goal on the opening drive of the second half with the score at 17-14

The Jets would have to wait until half way thru the third quarter to answer back when Thomas Jones scored on a one yard touchdown plunge to put the score at 21-17.After the Jets touchdown they would have their golden opportunity of the day holding the Chiefs offense to a three and out the Jets drove to the Chiefs 15 yard line only to have Brett Favre throw a interception to Brandon Flowers who took the int 92 yards causing a 10 point swing at the least and giving the Chiefs a 24-21 lead. After gaining the lead the Chiefs would spend the rest of the game trying to run out the clock but without Larry Johnson for a second straight week the Chiefs were unable to run out the clock and had to give the ball back to Brett Favre with 3:01 left. Favre would make them pay hitting Laveranues Coles with a 15 yard touchdown pass .

With a minute left in the contest Thigpen and the Chiefs could not answer back and fell 28-24. The Chiefs should hold their heads high after this contest, being outscore 68-10 the past two weeks this young team did not take no for a answer they picked off a hall of fame quarterback 3 times. They had the lead late in the fourth quarter and at no point in the game did they look intimidated.

To add to the positives for the Chiefs they actually had a young quarterback play decent. Tyler Thigpen committed zero turnovers and threw two touchdowns. The Chiefs showed progress today but will have to continue that progress to make this season a positive step in the rebuilding process.

Grading the Keys to the Game

Win the battle of the # 4’s: The Chiefs clearly won this battle as Tyler Thigpen played the best game of his young career going 25 for 36 280 yards, 2 touchdowns with no interceptions. Meanwhile the Chiefs did give up 2 touchdowns passing to Brett Favre but they also picked him off 3 times leading to points off turnovers. The defining moment of the battle between the Chiefs young secondary and the hall of famer Farve was #4 leading the Jets down the field with 3 minutes left for the go ahead score.. The Chiefs secondary got schooled but throwing fourth quarter touchdowns is what makes Favre who he is. The Chiefs secondary may have lost the battle but if they learn from their mistakes they may have won the war long term..

Grade: A-

Find l.J.’s replacement: Not being able to run the clock out late in this one may have cost the Chiefs. Larry Johnson’s replacement Kolby Smith was ineffective at best going for 15 yards on 11 carries. While change of pace back Jamal Charles was the perfect change of pace in this contest going 45 yards on 5 carries. With the offensive line still not playing great ball it is hard to judge the actual productivity of the Chiefs backs. Often times the RB’s had nowhere to go and the Jets knew the Chiefs would be trying move the ball on the ground so they would move a eighth player in the box on obvious running downs.

Grade: C-

Gunther needs to Condense the Nonsense: The Chiefs did give up another touchdown this week of 60+ yards again this week and were unable to stop Favre on the last drive of the game, but with Gunther making his move from the press box to the field this week he was able to keep his young defense in the game and not let them get down on their self. With the Chiefs defense keeping their heads up they did pick off Favre 3 times and scored a defensive touchdown. All year we have heard about the potential of this defense this week he finally saw some flashes. The Chiefs may have lost the game but the defense won several small victories that they can take with them next week.

Grade: B-
