Breaking Down the Chiefs Matchup with the Saints Sunday

Now at 4-5 on the season, the New Orleans Saints are hoping that a trip to KC this weekend to play the 1-8 Chiefs is just what the doctor ordered to get their season back on track so they can make a serious run at the playoffs in the NFC. Last week the Saints were blitzed by the Falcons at the Georgia Dome, losing 34-20.

The Chiefs are playing better, but are still looking to get better. Tyler Thigpen is playing well at the QB spot, but the team has gotten only so close before losing. The same thing happened last week, as they got the TD that got them within 20-19 against the Chargers, but with the team banged up on defense, Herm Edwards decided to go for two and the win, and the pass was incomplete, and the team lost by one.

As for the Saints, they are 0-4 on the road, so while they are playing a team that on paper they seem better than, winning on the road for sure has not come easy. They may get a lift with the return of RB Reggie Bush, but they simply have to be more consistant both on offense and on defense, as last week they were not very good in the 14-point loss.

Look for the Saints to try and go downfield often against the Chiefs, who have a number of injuires on the defensive side. Drew Brees is the ring leader of the #1 offense in the league, and they can spread the field and do plenty of damage, which they should be able to do against the Chiefs. Brees should have one of his usual 300-350 yard games throwing.

The Chiefs may also get a lift, as their leading rusher, Larry Johnson, is expected to be back. Johnson has been out due to off the field issues, and he should give a spark to an offense that has been much better since Thigpen has taken over. The QB has thrown for 710 yards and six TD’s in his last three games.

In the end though, the Saints have the better team, and they realize a loss here to a team with one win and they can basically kiss their playoff hopes good-bye. Look for Brees and company to put up plenty and more than enough points to leave KC with their first road win of the season by two TD’s.
