Chiefs vs. Chargers Pre Game Gab

A early November rematch is in the works as the San Diego Chargers travel to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs who gave the Chargers a 20-19 scare last time these teams hooked up. The difference in that game was a Chiefs botched extra point that later forced them to go for two which failed and basically nullified two extra points.

The Chargers are clinging to the slightest of playoff hopes at 5-8 they still have a shot mathematically as they trail the Broncos 8-5 by three games with three to go. The Chiefs come in at 2-11 but have not given up on the season, they have been close in six out of their last seven games and hold the advantage over the Chargers for the series lead 50-46-1.

Some fans would like to see the Chiefs lose their final three games so they can jockey for draft position, Herm Edwards made it clear he plans on trying to win the last three games and is not very interested in where he picks in the draft.

The Chiefs also announced this week that the final three games are a evaluation period for Tyler Thigpen as they head into the off season. This game has upset potential written all over it, the Chiefs are young energetic and eager to prove themselves, if reality has sets in and the Bolts have already thrown in the towel on the season the Chiefs could get up early and never look back. No one would have thought the Chargers would be playing meaningless games in December back in August , not when you have the star power they have.

Tyler Thigpen has cooled off a little bit from his hot start but he will look to get it turned around this week. Thigpen had the best game of his short career last time he faced the Chargers, 266 passing yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions in addition to that he led the Chiefs on a 4th quarter drive that resulted in a touchdown with 29 seconds left.

It also helps that the Chargers have the 30th ranked pass defense in the NFL a clear indication they miss linebacker Shawn Merriman whom they lost for the season after week one. A Chiefs victory at Arrowhead would be the 1st since September and a nice holiday present for the fans who show up every week and keep the Chiefs sellout streak going.

The Keys to the Game

Generate a pass rush: The Chiefs have three talented young corners who have played well all season, despite that fact the Chiefs rank 29th in pass defense. The lack of pass rush has been blamed for the low ranking and rightfully so Kansas City has six sacks this season. The record for fewest sacks in a season is eleven the Chiefs will need to turn it around quick if they don’t want to end up in the record books. The clock is ticking on Gunther if the Chiefs set that record it don’t look good for him.

Stop L.T: It sounds simple enough and earlier this season the Chiefs held L.T. to 78 yards on 22 carries but the Chiefs are still ranked 31st in rush defense. Tank Tyler and Glen Dorsey will have step up and clog the running lanes to give Derrick Johnson room to make plays as he gets acclimated to his switch to MLB. San Diego’s offense is at it’s best when it has defenses on it’s heels and can stay unpredictable, if the Chiefs can keep the Bolts one dimensional they have a shot.

Give L.J the ball 20 + times: In the loss last week to Denver the Chiefs led the majority of the game but at half L.J. had only registered three carries and finished the game with eleven carries. L.J. has proven he can play in the “Pistol” offense averaging 4.5 yards a carry and is ranked 10th in the league in rush yards per game. The Chiefs have given L.J. the ball 20 times in game four times this season they have won two of those games, their record when they don’t give L.J. the ball 20 times 0-9.

Final Score: Chiefs 27 Chargers 19

San Diego is in full blown desperation mode and have to really step up against K.C. to stay alive for the post season, every time San Diego has faced a pressure situation they have crumbled , seven of their eight losses have been by a possession or less that does not say a lot for the heart of a veteran laden team. With Thigpen under the microscope look for him to have a big day as he tries to solidify his spot as the starter heading into training camp. I predict San Diego comes out flat and puts a TD on the board late to make the game closer than it was.
