Chiefs vs. Bengals Post Game Gab

Playing maybe their worst game this season since the Tennessee game, the Chiefs capped of the worst season in their 49 year history losing to the Bengals 16-6. The Chiefs played uninspired football and were unable to outscore one of the leagues worst offenses who were without the services of Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh and both of their starting offensive tackles.

After a early 3-0 lead Cincinnati pushed that lead to 10-0 after a 2 yard touchdown dive early in the 2nd quarter by Cedric Benson. With the Chiefs unable to gain any offensive traction in the 1st half Cincinnati would take advantage and increase their lead to 13-0 after a Shayne Graham field goal inside the two minute warning.. In the 1st half the Bengals were able to control the clock 22:00 to 8:00

Both teams opened the 2nd half exchanging punts until the 6:21 mark of the 4th quarter when Shayne Graham again came thru with a field goal for the Bengals, this time a 43 yarder. The Chiefs would wait till their last drive of the game to end the shutout.

Tyler Thigpen took the Chiefs 91 yards in 11 plays hitting Tony G with his 10th TD catch of the season to make the score 16-6, but when the 2 point conversion failed any thought of a comeback was promptly ended. The Bengals would recover the onside kick and run the clock out on the game and the Chiefs 2008 season.

When a season full of frustration at 2-14 comes to a close a lot of players are ready to vent. When running back Larry Johnson was asked about his future with the team he did not hold back, “Hopefully, my future is not with this organization. It’s not (the Chiefs’) fault.. Half of it is mine. Half of it is my off-the-field situation and other things that occurred.”

L.J. also went on to elaborate why he thinks his time is up in Kansas city, “On the football field, my role definitely diminished when I came back (from injury). I felt like I wasn’t getting as many carries as I could have handled. I felt like I could have helped as much as I could have, but they shifted their powers to other players on the team.

I feel as though my time is up in this city and this program.” and L.J. did not leave any doubt that a new G.M. will not change his mind, “No. It has everything to do with the environment. The city is tired of me, and the organization and I have run our course together. It’s time to move on for me. There could be 100 changes.. It’s time for me to go.”

All Pro tight end Tony Gonzalez also chimed in on his status with the team but chose his words more carefully than Johnson. “You look at what Atlanta, Miami and Baltimore did (this season), there’s no reason we can’t do the same,” Gonzalez said. “But if a new GM comes in and wants to start over, the last thing I want to hear is rebuild. I’m in my 13th year, and I still enjoy the game..”

Amid all the chaos Herm Edwards sounded like a man who is or thinks he is going to return next season, he said it will just be business as usual. “Yes, it’s absolutely business as usual. I’ll be in the office all week and I’ll be around. We’ll evaluate our team and go from there.” “We’ll go back in tomorrow and talk with a few folks, and from there, start getting ready for the Senior Bowl, where we’ll evaluate the players.

The coaches will evaluate our players, and from there, the coaches will take off for about a week. And when they come back, we’ll go to the Senior Bowl and look at players.” Pretty confident words for a coach that just finished a 2-14 season.

Grading The Keys to the Game

Stop T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Ocho Cinco: Just as last week neither player played, but no Bengals receiver had over 34 yards receiving and QB Ryan Fitzpatrick finished with only 129 yards passing and no TD’S.

Grade: Incomplete

Give L.J. the rock 20 times: 10 carries 18 yards and if L.J. has his way he just played his last game in K.C. he may just get his wish as the Chiefs have refused to give L.J. the ball the past couple of weeks despite his success. The Chiefs failed to move the ball all day and failed to give L.J. a opportunity to succeed .

Grade: F-

Win the 4th quarter:
The Chiefs actually won a 4th quarter for the 1st time in a long time, but it was for not as the Chiefs offense sputtered and did not score any points for the 1st three quarters leaving the Bengals with a 13-0 advantage. The Chiefs may have outscored the Bengals in the 4th but not enough to get a win.

Grade: C
