Grading the Chiefs 2006 Draft Class
Most experts say you cannot grade a draft class until the players have completed three seasons,. Herm Edwards?s first draft class just completed their third season and the results are mixed at best. With a new G.M. coming to town Herm?s job as head coach has been called into question and with Herm so involved in the draft process the new G.M. is sure to evaluate his draft history.
Round 1 Tamba Hali DE: Showed potential his first two seasons as a Chief with 8 sacks his rookie year followed up by 7.5 sacks his sophomore season. With Jared Allen leaving in a trade to the Vikings over the off season Hali had to switch positions from left end to right end, the switch failed miserably Hali produced only three sacks all season and eventually was moved back to his old position. The 2009 season will be a make or break season for Hali a strong showing could land him a new contract, another showing like the 2008 season and he could be off the roster all together.
Grade: B-
Other notable players selected after Hali: DeAngelo Williams, Mathias Kiwanuka, DeMeco Ryans, Greg Jennings
Round 2 Bernard Pollard SS: Special teams stand out his rookie season which lead to more playing time in his second year, by his third season the big hitting Pollard was firmly entrenched as the Chiefs starting strong safety. Needs work on wrapping up in the running game but has shown major growth since his rookie season if Pollard can quit trying to blow people up with his shoulder pads and work on his coverage skills he could wind up in K.C. for a long time.
Grade: B+
Other notable players selected after Pollard: Maurice Jones-Drew, Tony Scheffler, Jerious Norwood, Devin Hester
Round 3 Brodie Croyle QB: Strong arm QB from Alabama, the Chiefs and more specifically Herm Edwards fell in love with his southern swagger. Sat on the bench his rookie season and learned from Trent Green and Damon Huard, his second season he was given the starting job and still could not beat out Damon Huard. Brodie Croyle lasted about three quarters this season, after being knocked out for several weeks in the opener against the Patriots, Croyle was knocked out for good when he returned to face the Titans and tore his ACL. To make matters worse Croyle has zero victories as a starting QB.
Grade: F-
Other notable players selected after Croyle: Owen Daniels, Brandon Marshall, Elvis Dumervil, Leon Washington
Round 5 Marcus Maxey CB: Tall physical corner from Miami spent his rookie season shuffling between Chicago and Kansas City, was not invited back for his second season and has not made a NFL roster since.
Grade: F-
Other notable players selected after Maxey: Lawrence Vickers, Wali Lundy, Mark Anderson, Jeff King
Round 6 Tre Stallings G: Project pick out of Mississippi spent two years on the Roster before being released. Never made a impact or received much playing time, currently resides on the Ravens practice squad,
Grade: D-
Round 6 Jeff Webb WR: First noticed by the Chiefs playing at San Diego State with Herm Edwards son, played little but special teams his rookie season but came up with a decent sophomore season compiling 28 catches for 300 yards. Webb looked to figure into the starting competition at WR going into the 2008 season but struggled to get separation for defenders and soon was buried on the bench. Over his career Webb has been beaten out of a job by the likes of Sammie Parker, Bobby Sippio and Devard Darling.
Grade: D-
Other notable players selected after Stallings and Webb: Antoine Bethea, Bruce Gradkowski, Cortland Finnegan
Round 7 Jarrod Page FS: Steal of the draft for the Chiefs, Page debated before the draft whether to play baseball or football professionally after being selected by the Cubs in the amateur draft. Fulltime starter since his second season and has shown a knack for big plays late in games. Needs to work on consistency with pass coverage, with that being said Page should be a fixture on the Chiefs for years to come.
Grade: A+
Other notable players selected after Page: Marques Colston
Overall the draft produced three starters, two backups and two practice squad players. History will probably not remember this as Herm?s best draft but 43% of the players turned into starters and five overall are still on the roster , by NFL averages this draft would be graded out as a sucsess just not the kind of results you need to see from a coach who preaches building thru the draft.
