Dispelling the False Coaching Rumors

Sports talk radio, local media outlets and even ESPN all had one thing in common on Friday, they were all buzzing about the termination of Herm Edwards. Speculation ran wild and by Friday evening Chris Mortensen was reporting the Chiefs were nearing a deal with Mike Shanahan , Mortensen

then backed off that story saying the Chiefs were targeting Shanahan. NFL.com’s Adam Schefter immediately came out and said the Chiefs and Shanahan have not spoken and that Shanahan will not coach this season due to the lack of ability to reassemble a coaching staff in such short notice and family obligations ( daughters wedding in the summer).

Almost every available candidate has been rumored to be “near a deal”, but the best rumor I have heard was Bill Cowher purchasing a 1.3 million dollar house in Leawood Kansas …….. Which is of course not true, no matter how much Chiefs fans want the “Chin” it’s not going to happen this season, Cowher will spend this season at CBS and the Chiefs will sign a coach to a three or four year deal further decreasing the chances that Cowher lands in K.C.

The hottest rumor by far has been that the Chiefs are just waiting till the Super Bowl is over so they can formally announce Arizona offensive coordinator Todd Haley as their new head coach. Sighting Haley’s previous working relationship with Scott Pioli’s father in law football impresario Bill Parcells.

One thing is clear the Chiefs are not close to hiring anybody as their head coach for one simple reason, The Rooney Rule. Instituted before the 2003 season The Rooney Rule states that at least one minority candidate must be interviewed before a team can make a hire. The only team to ever ignore the rule was Matt Millen and the Detroit Lions and they were fined 200,000 by the league. Clark hunt and Scott Pioli are too thorough not to follow the proper steps in hiring a new coach. Expect several candidates to be brought in for interviews over the next two weeks, not to say Haley will won’t be the next Chiefs coach but by league rules the Chiefs must first do their due diligence in the coaching search and that could take some time.
