7 Round Chiefs Mock Draft 1.0

With the NFL draft becoming more and more popular every year mock drafts start earlier and earlier every year. A mock draft in late January usually is as accurate as a weather forecast three years in advance. Even though the combine has not taken place yet and the Chiefs are without a head coach, I have listed below my first of several Chiefs mock draft based on players current draft rankings and team needs.
Round 1 Pick # 3:
Michael Johnson DE Georgia Tech,
At 6-7 260 Johnson will need to add about 20 pounds to his frame to improve his draft status, known as one of the best pure pass rushers in the draft and pass rusher is exactly what the Chiefs need with their first pick.
Currently projected to go in the middle of the first round Johnson could elevate his stock in to the top five with a impressive combine.
Round 2 Pick # 2:
Phil Loadholt LT Oklahoma,
Still lacking some pieces on the offensive line the Chiefs could target Loadholt in the second round. Coming from Oklahoma Loadholt is no stranger to big games and is a massive left tackle at 6-8 337, Loadholt was one of the anchors on the best offensive line in college football preventing QB Sam Bradford from getting touched nearly all season.
Round 3 Pick # 3:
Clay Mathews OLB USC,
No team in the NFL needs linebacker help like the Chiefs, enter Clay Mathews son of former NFL Player Clay Mathews the 2nd and nephew of Hall of famer Bruce Mathews. Clay Mathews initially walked on at USC but over the course of his career moved in to the starting LB spot. Allowed to walk on at USC cause of his name Mathews proved himself at USC and possesses the kind of toughness the Chiefs need.
Round 4 Pick # 2:
Graham Harrell QB Texas Tech,
The one top Big 12 QB not to be voted a Heisman finalist, Harrell’s toughest task going into the draft will be proving he is not just a product of Mike Leach’s system. At only 6-2 Harrell does lack the ideal size NFL scouts like but has a cannon arm and can make all of the throws necessary to be a NFL QB, wit a good combine Harrell could push himself in to the 3rd round but don’t expect him to go much earlier than that.
Round 5 Pick # 3:
Jason Phillips MLB TCU,
Tough hard nosed player with the ability to make plays in space, a little undersized at 6-1 236 to play MLB but if he adds a couple of pounds of muscle before the combine he will be the kind of player the Chiefs will be targeting in the draft as Scott Pioli attempts to change the culture and the attitude of this football team.
Round 6 Pick # 2:
Ray Feinga OG BYU,
When drafting late in the draft it always best to go big and Fienga brings a lot of size to a offensive line at 6-5 348 Fienga primarily figures in to the mix as a guard in the NFL but has the flexibility to play both guard and tackle. As a 5th year senior Fienga has the ability and maturity to contribute from day one.
Round 7 Pick # 3:
Brandon Tate WR UNC,
On pace for a career season before a knee injury derailed his senior year. Tate has a explosive ability to return kicks as well as catch passes. Had it not been for his knee injury Tate might be a more recognizable name right now and his name might be heard a little bit earlier in draft. If the Chiefs can nab Tate in the 7th round they should consider the last day of the draft a success.
