Top 5 Under the Radar Free Agents

Mum has been the word in Kansas city since Scott Pioli began his run as General Manager, no information has leaked out of Arrowhead regarding the head coaching search or Scott?s draft preference (QB or pass rusher) or even what free agents they would like to target. All of this lack of information has left people with only speculation regarding who will fill all of the Chiefs holes.

Scott Pioli has a track record of signing mid level free agents and anyone who thinks the Chiefs will splurge in free agency just because they may be under the cap in the upwards of 45 million may be mistaken. Pioli only had one off season in which he went after big name players, he landed Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth and Adalius Thomas after that the Patriots went 16-0.

That was the exception, Pioli built his name signing players like Mike Vrabel, Sammy Morris and trading for a unknown Wes Welker. The Chiefs may splurge a little and sign a Julius peppers or a Terrell Suggs but expect most of the players brought in to be of the lesser known variety. The list below contains some of the best second tier free agents in this years market.

1. Gabe Watson: (Defensive Tackle) Started zero games this year for the N.F.C. Champion Cardinals but played regularly in the Cardinals defensive line rotation. At 332 and only 25 years old Watson could provide quality depth and could figure into the Chiefs free agent plans.

2. Shaun Cody: (Defensive Tackle) Second round pick in 2005 for Detroit and four year starter at USC. Never saw the field much in Detroit or had much success but nobody has really had success there over the past couple of seasons. With much undiscovered potential Cody will draw interest from several teams.

3. Byron Leftwich: (Quarterback) When Ben Roethlisberger went down with a injury this season Leftwich stepped in and played well, the question about Leftwich has always been durability not talent. With no serious playing time over the past two seasons Leftwich should be his healthiest in years and ready to hit the open market.

4. Richie Incognito: (Guard)Versatile offensive lineman can play either center or guard effectively, the knock on Richie is he has spent half of his four year career on the injured reserve. Injury concerns may cost Incognito a big payday but he will be signed very early in free agency.

5. Derrick Ward: (Running back)
With a free agent market that includes teammate Brandon Jacobs and San Diego Charger Darren Sproles teams may forget that despite being a backup Ward averaged 5.6 yards a carry and ran for over a 1,000 yards in 2008. The Chiefs will be in the market for a RB if Larry Johnson gets his wish and is given his out right release.
