Grading the Chiefs Draft
Round 1, Pick 3 (3) Tyson Jackson DE 6′4″ 295 LSU: It is hard to question Scott Pioli when it comes to the draft, but one would assume the Chiefs could have fell back a couple of slots, trading with a Mark Sanchez hungry team and still picked up Tyson Jackson with out paying him # 3 overall money. Jackson will fit into the 3-4 defense playing the same role as Richard Seymour. If Jackson becomes as productive as Seymour then the pick will get an A+ but for now this pick was a bit of a reach especially with Aaron Curry still on the board.Grade: C+
Round 3, Pick 3 (67) Alex Magee DT 6′3″ 298 Purdue: In the third round Pioli continued to build up the defensive line this time picking up a solid rotational player in Magee who can play inside or out on the line. Magee will eventually play the same role on this team as Ty Warren does with the Patriots. This pick gave the Chiefs six players on their defensive line picked in the third round or higher over the last three years.
Grade: B+
Round 4, Pick 2 (102) Donald Washington CB 6′0″ 197 Ohio State: Washington will start out playing nickel guarding the slot receiver, Washington had second round talent but character concerns played a role in him slipping to the fourth round. With out top end speed Washington could end up playing safety in the NFL.
Grade: B+
Round 5, Pick 3 (139) Colin Brown OL 6′7″ 335 Missouri: Big time mauler on the Missouri offensive line and will not be as much of a project pick that you usually get in the fifth round. Brown rarely received help from a tight end in pass blocking situations due to Missouri running the spread offense and more than held his own against stiff competition in the Big 12. Brown figures to be in the competition at right tackle from day one.
Grade: A-
Round 6, Pick 2 (175) Quinten Lawrence WR 6′0″ 184 McNeese State: Speedy receiver who will help with the return game from day one. Eventually Lawrence could turn into the deep threat the Chiefs offense has been sorely lacking, for now he will have to make his name on special teams.
Grade: B+
Round 7, Pick 3 (212) Javarris Williams RB 5′10″ 223 Tennessee State: The Chiefs will need a big running back if they choose to release Larry Johnson also Williams could figure in at the competition at full back. Either way the Chiefs will need some talented bodies in the backfield and Williams defiantly qualifies.
Grade: B-
Round 7, Pick 28 (237) (From Panthers through Dolphins) Jake O’Connell WR 6′3″ 250 Miami (OHIO): O’Connell gives the Chiefs much needed depth behind Brad Cottam after the departure of Tony Gonzalez, O’Connell is athletic and fast for a tight end, he figures to play more predominantly in the passing game than the running game until he can get accustomed to the NFL blocking packages. This pick could be a steal as O’Connell has all the tools to be a very productive tight end.
Grade: A-
Round 7, Pick 47 (256) (Compensatory selection) Ryan Succop K 6′2″ 218 South Carolina: Big time kicker from the SEC with a big time leg, also a versatile player who can punt in a pinch and the value of that cannot be understated as the Chiefs went part of the year with a injured punter. Bottom line if Succop can beat out the competition and win the job as kicker the pick will be worth it.
Grade: A-
