I am totally perplexed and frustrated by much of the early negativity surrounding the new Chiefs regime. As long suffering Chiefs fans many of us begged, cajoled and hoped that Clark Hunt would make a change and bring in a new management team that could finally turn this thing around and get us heading in the right direction. The Chiefs under Carl Peterson had become a laughing stock and we were a team that players, FA or other teams wanted to deal with. Carl Peterson always managed to win the battles and lose the war....get the new draft pick signed for the least amount of money, and first time their contract was up they couldn't wait to get out of KC. Not only that, but the best and brighest coaching staffs didn't want to come here....Schottenheimer and Vermeil both wanted out in the end.

I am still pinching myself that Hunt was able to pry Scott Piolo away from the Patriots and come to KC....this was a major, major victory for this organization.

There is still a lot of whining about 3 things which I'd like to give my perspective on:

#1 - Not trading out of #3 to take Tyson Jackson later in the first round. Wasn't gonna happen folks....no one wanted that pick and as much as he tried he couldn't get out of that spot. Didn't help that we didn't have a #2 pick either.....does anyone remember we actually got a potential franchise QB in Matt Cassel and a true defensive leader in Mike Vrabel with that pick? Wow we have short memories don't we....

#2 - Not trading/dumping LJ. See #1 - sorry to disappoint but there is little/no value to LJ at this time. Best option for the Chiefs is to keep him for now and see if he gets on board with the off-season program. Whether we like it or not we do need a brusing running back and if he can get his attitude turned around, he could be a part of this turnaround (think Corey Dillon, Randy Moss). Didn't help that Edwards and Peterson coddled and babied LJ....trust me, won't happen with this regime. Either he'll show up to play for this team, or he will be gone. Chiefs have already laid the foundation for this with the recent arbitration action. He's on a short lease with this regime. Our QB does need some help to run this offense.

#3 - Run in with Brian Waters - believe me, I didn't like the sounds of this as much as many of you. But, truth be told, Watters had no right bursting in to the facility right in the thick of free agency and draft preparations demanding anything of this new regime. As they say, 'the truth hurts' and I think some of these established veterans need to realize and accept that they're not running the show anymore. Look, I loved Gonzo as much as any Chiefs fan, but frankly it was all about him. I do hope Brian Watters can get on board and they can patch things up, but if not, the Chiefs will move on without him, and if he's not willing to get on board now, it's probably better that they do so sooner rather than later. It's call addition by subtraction folks.

I expect this team to be much better in 09 than they were last year. Remember all those late-game collapses and close losses....the Chiefs will win a lot more of those games just through better coaching and the leadership being instilled in this new team...Vrabel, Engram, Cassel. In hindsight a fatal flaw of the Peterson era was thinking you could do it all with young guys. In reality you need a blend of experience and youth. Above all you need a clear vision and direction from the top down. We now have it....let's give it a chance to take root and grow.
