Lombardi Clears Up the Cassel Contract and His April Report of a Deal
Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post took a beating by numerous reporters as well as national media after he reported on draft day that Matt Cassel had inked a long-term deal with the Chiefs. Lombardi’s reporting came true last week a little later than he thought when Cassel did ink a mega-deal with the club.
Lombardi appeared on 810 WHB last Thursday to talk about the Cassel contract and clear up his original report back on April 25th. Lombardi says that the reports of Cassel making $28 million guaranteed, it’s actually $35.5 million when the $7.5 million roster bonus due in March of 2011 is considered, meaning he was close to right on the money with his April report of 6 years at $36 million.
He took heat from a number of big names, including Chiefs GM Scott Pioli. Another reporter that said the report was not true was Peter King of SI. While it took longer than he thought, seems that Lombardi’s report is now right on the money – better late than never.
