Training camp position overview: Running backs

Chiefs Bears Football
Last year the Chiefs went thru five running backs because of injury, along the way the discovered some of the young running backs they brought in of the street like Jackie Battle and Dantrell Savage had some talent. While they were inconsistent they flashed enough potential when they got the chance to still be on the team. Even after Scott Pioli went though the roster with a fine tooth comb which should speak to their abilities. Add to the fact the Chiefs drafted bowling ball running back Javarris Williams in the seventh round and the Chiefs have a log jam at running back. Below is a list of the running backs on the roster as the team heads into training camp and their chances of making the team.

Larry Johnson: After a turbulent off season in which Johnson demanded a trade and bashed the people of Kansas City, it appears Johnson has came back to his senses. Johnson has been at the off season programs and appears serious about playing for the Chiefs at this point. The Chiefs will have a offense based around running the ball and Johnson the former all pro figures to factor in prominently in to this offense unless of course the Chiefs find a willing trade partner or get tired if his act and release Johnson.

Chances of making the team: 75%

Kolby Smith: The often injured third year back will have much to prove in training camp and the preseason after two injury marred seasons. Smith has had his moments which include a 150 yard performance against the Raiders two season ago. If Smith can stay off the IR, contribute on special teams and display the talent he has showed the past two seasons Smith should make the team.

Chances of making the team: 63%

Jamaal Charles: This second year back has shown the ability to return kicks, run the ball and catch passes. Charles adds a extra wrinkle to the Chiefs rushing attack with his speed that no other running back currently on this roster can match. After a productive rookie campaign expect to see a lot more of Charles in 09.

Chances of making the team: 99%

Jackie Battle: This down hill runner from the university of Houston has spent the past two seasons bouncing from the practice squad to the 53 man roster. However this year maybe the year Battleā€™s number is up, with Battle unable to prove the past two season that he can be a every down back his days on the roster may be numbered.

Chances of making the team: 15%

Dantrell Savage: When the Chiefs running backs started dropping like flies last season Savage came in and filled in sparingly as a kick returner and a change of pace back. Savage did show some potential as a return specialist with a 59 yard return last season against the Titans. To make this team this season Savage will have to dominate the return game in the pre season.

Chances of making the team: 17%

Javarris Williams: A bruising back type runner drafted by the Chiefs in the seventh round of this years draft, Williams ran for over a 1,000 yard in three consecutive seasons for Tennessee state. Williams making this team will come down to two factors, Williams will have to be effective as a short yardage back and Williams will have to beat out incumbent starter Mike Cox at full back.
Chances of making the team: 50%
