Day one of the Kansas City Chiefs 2009 training camp is now complete, and officially in the record books. No earth-shattering news to chew on, but the day certainly wasn’t without a few notes of interest.
* DL Glenn Dorsey surprised some by failing the mandatory conditioning test.
* LJ praised the wide receivers and expressed some concerns with the O-line.
And then there was this little snippet provided by WR Jeff Webb,
“The starting job is all I want. I am not aiming any higher or lower,”
I realize it has been a long off-season, so for those that have forgotten, Jeff Webb is the Chiefs wide out that caught five passes for 46-yards last season. Webb was inactive (benched) for eight games, played in five and started one.
I’m not sure if I should laugh or cry. Imagine, such productivity after basically calling “net” back in June of 2008, “If you go in thinking that you don’t have a chance to start, then you probably don’t have a chance,” Webb said. “You have to believe in yourself, work hard and then take advantage of your opportunity. We only have one guaranteed starter, and that’s (Dwayne) Bowe. After that, it’s all about who performs the best.”
To be totally cynical just wouldn’t be right, when in fact there is some reason to be optimistic about Jeff Webb’s future. It has been reported that Chiefs new starting QB Matt Cassel worked out with Webb this off-season at the USC campus and the two had been gelling. This is truly refreshing news, especially if Webb should need to fight off compation from Brett Farve’s summer time receiving crew from Oak Grove (Miss.) High School.
Talk is not only cheap but sometimes down right stupid as well.
Jeff Webb isn’t competing against Bobby Sippio and Will Franklin this time around, but rather two veterans (Engram and Darling) and a hungry rookie in Quinten Lawrence.
Next time a reporter should ask a question, Webb might be best served by simply replying with, “No comment today boys, I’m working.”
