Chiefs Vs. Seahawks Pre Game Gab

Tyler ThigpenAs the Chiefs enter week three of the pre season, the most important week in which starters should play well into the third quarter they will host the Seattle Seahawks while they continue to search for their first win of the preseason. This team could have a much different look to the roster by the time they take the field at Arrowhead on Saturday. Already the Chiefs have completed a trade with the Dolphins that has brought reserve lineman Ikechuku Ndukwe and Andy Alleman to KC to bolster the offensive line depth as the Chiefs have been unimpressed with their backups play this preseason. Compensation for the trade was not immediately known.

Now reports are surfacing that backup QB Tyler Thigpen could be getting shopped around by the Chiefs. Reports are that the three interested teams are the Buccaneers, Panthers and the Jaguars. The Panthers would be the team that makes the most sense on paper since Thigpen played college ball in the Carolinas and the Panthers have been held back for years with poor backup QB play whenever the oft injured Jake Delhomme goes down for a extended period of time. Expect Thigpen to play a lot in the second half as the Chiefs attempt to showcase his skills for the teams interested in his services. This will be a real opportunity for Scott Pioli to shine as well, Thigpen may have been the odd man out on the Chiefs roster if Pioli can get anything higher than a fifth round pick for Thigpen, Pioli will only add to his genius resume.

For the third straight week expect a different duo of starting receivers as well. Devard Darling figures to start at one end while Dwayne Bowe seems to have worked his way back in to Todd Haley’s good graces and will start opposite Darling. Only time will tell if this is a lesson learned for Dwayne Bowe or only a temporary fix till the Bowe Show emerges once again. Usually winning a preseason game is not that important but for the Chiefs this is a very significant game, not because the Chiefs are 0-2 but because the Chiefs are trying to develop a winning culture in KC and after coming up one yard shy in a game that the Chiefs outplayed the Vikings their confidence has to be a little shaken. Secondly the Starters will play in to the third quarter this will be the closest thing to a real game for them until the season opener. The Chiefs desperately need their starters to beat the Sea hawks starters.

Keys to the Game

Find your starters on the offensive line: The additions of Alleman and Ndkuwe prove the Cheifs are not satisfied with what they are seeing from their offensive line. The Chiefs have been flip flopping starting right tackles throughout the preseason between Barry Richardson and Damion McIntosh and with Ndukwe in the picture this could now be a three man race. Offensive line’s need time to gel, time to get a feel for each other. Anymore juggling on the line and the Chiefs could risk having a in cohesive unit when the games count for real.

Decide on a nose tackle: This week Tank Tyler has been practicing with the first team at nose tackle, last week it was Ron Edwards who also started the Vikings game. I understand Todd Haley is out there looking for the most effective combination of players but he has seen both Edwards and Tyler all training camp and should know which player is the better fit by now. Tyler had first round potential when the chiefs selected him in the draft hopefully he can display that potential that has eluded him for the past two seasons and become a consistent stabilizer on the line.

Keep your starters healthy: Todd Haley has already admitted this team pretty much has to play perfect football to win games this year. The most detrimental thing that could happen to this team is to have one of their few offensive weapons go down or one of their few defensive leaders go down for a extended period of time. The chiefs are not a team blessed with tremendous depth and a key injury could be catastrophic for this team.

Weather Report: Weather at kickoff should be a perfect 70 degrees with a northerly breeze at eleven miles per hour with partly cloudy skies.
