Chiefs Vs. Raiders Pre Game Gab

Chiefs raiders
It’s week two of the NFL season and the Chiefs are already faced with a must win against the Oakland Raiders, after the Raiders game the Chiefs may be in for a long wait when it comes to a real chance at victory. The Chiefs following five games are against the Cowboys, Redskins, Giants, Eagles and Chargers if the Chiefs lose to the Raiders they could very easily end up 0-7 heading in to their bye week. The Raiders meanwhile are in a similar situation as the Chiefs, they are 0-1 after playing well but losing to a more heavily favored team late in the fourth quarter (San Diego Chargers). The Raiders despite losing did look more discipline and well coached than they have in years and the addition of Richard Seymour seems to have given the Raiders defense a leader to rally around.

The availability of Matt Cassel and cornerback Brandon Flowers will remain a question up until game time at least that’s what Todd Haley said. Q: Is Matt Cassel still going to be a game time decision?
TODD HALEY: “Yeah, I think that’s the safest. If I make a promise now and something doesn’t go according to plan or vice versa. I think both those guys, Flowers and Matt again are both clearly ahead of where they were last week at this time. So, that’s positive but I think that this will be a deal where we will have to make sure they’re good to go. We’ll make it probably Sunday morning.”

The Chiefs can ill afford to go without Brandon Flowers and Matt Cassel in this game, they will need all the talent they can get for Sunday, the Raiders outmatch the Chiefs in speed, talent and athleticism. The Raiders boast three top ten picks at the skill positions on offense and receiver Darius Howard-Bey and running back Darren McFadden have both been clocked running 4.3 40’s. This is with no doubt the Chiefs most winnable game for the next several weeks and if they are going to pull this game off it will come down to head coach/ offensive coordinator Todd Haley .

Todd Haley will have to make sure the Chiefs are discipline and focused Sunday and will be in charge of designing a game plan that can take advantage of a Raiders defense that looked stout and gave the Chargers fits but also took too many chances and left their cornerbacks in one on one coverage too often. The Raiders will definitely be stacking eight players in the box if Haley can call some plays to stretch the Raiders defense it will open up the play action passing game along with the running game allowing the defense to not spend forty minutes on the field as the did last week against the Ravens.

Keys to the Game

1.Get L.J. going: This has been a key to the game going back to last year and is probably starting to sound redundant but until the Chiefs figure out how to get L.J. back on track they are not giving themselves the best chance to win. Johnson has had some monster games against the Raiders if Johnson can find a way to have another monster game it would help the Chiefs on multiple levels.

2. Protect the quarterback: On paper this o-line does not look that bad, the only real question on this line should be at right tackle. Despite how the line looks on paper Brodie Croyle spent a lot of the last game on his back, if the line can’t block they Chiefs can’t throw deep, if they can’t throw deep they can’t clear the eighth defender out the box. If the Chiefs can’t do that they can’t win.

3.Stop the Raiders running attack: It gets no easier for the Chiefs rush defense, last week they saw three very capable running backs and had problems stopping them. This week the Chiefs will face three very talented running backs, Darren McFadden has the speed to burn and Michael Bush has the strength to bang it up the middle. The Chiefs have to stop the Raiders rushing attack if the defense spends nearly forty minutes on the field again the Chiefs have no shot at victory.

Injury Report:

Chiefs:

Matt Cassel QB Knee Questionable

Brandon Flowers CB Shoulder Questionable

Raiders:
Nick Miller WR Out

Chaz Schilens WR Out

Johnnie Lee Higgins WR Questionable

Nnamdi Asomugha CB Probable

Kirk Morrison LB Probable

Greg Ellis DE Probable

Weather Report: The temperature at kickoff will be 71 degrees with a four mile per hour east north easterly breeze.

Final Score: Chiefs 17 Raiders 14

The odds are stacked against the Chiefs they have lost their last two home openers and have lost the last two times they have hosted the Raiders. This game will come down to coaching versus talent and the Raiders won’t be able to keep playing discipline football it’s just not who they are and if the Raiders start committing penalties and giving the ball away this will play right in to the Chiefs hands. Expect a low scoring close game with the Raiders blowing it late.
