Todd Haley today made it sound like the Chiefs granted veteran linebacker and special teams player Monty Beisel his wish by releasing him.
The Chiefs began training camp with Zach Thomas and Derrick Johnson as their starting inside linebackers. They passed over Beisel and eventually made their way to Corey Mays and Demorrio Williams as their starters.
Then, last week in Philadelphia, rookie Jovan Belcher, an undrafted free agent, came in for Mays and Haley indicated Belcher would continue to play even if he doesn’t start.
Keep in mind both Haley and defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast coached Beisel with the Cardinals.
“He probably would have liked to play a lot more and had kind of been relegated to special teams,” Haley said. “It just didn’t work out. I love everything about Monty and how he works and prepares and what he brings to the team.”
