After winning in Washington last week the Chiefs hope of a repeat performance got dashed early and often by the San Diego Chargers who lit the Chiefs up with big play after big play on their way to 400 yards of total offense. The onslaught began early as LaDainian Tomlinson got the Chargers offense jump started with a 36 yard run right up the middle of the Chiefs defense on the first play of the Chargers second possession, the Chargers would parlay that run in to a three yard touchdown pass from Phillip Rivers to Malcolm Floyd to go up 7-0 there would be no looking back for the Chargers as they never trailed in this contest. The Chargers would soon extend the lead to 14-0 as Phillip Rivers lead the Chargers right down the field on the Chargers next possession resulting in a 10 yard touchdown pass to Vincent Jackson.
The Chargers would again find their selves with the ball to open up the 2nd quarter after a third strait stalled Chiefs possession and the Chargers were going for the jugular the whole game as Phillip rivers hit Vincent Jackson on a 51 yard bomb the first of two 51 yard receptions for Jackson who torched the Chiefs for 142 yards in the first half. The Chargers drive would result in a Nate Kaeding field goal making it a three possession game 17-0. After trading punts the Chiefs finally gained some offensive traction and got in field goal position only to see Ryan Succop miss the 43 yard field goal wide right, with 1:11 remaining Phillip rivers and the red hot Chargers offense took full advantage of the good field position going 45 yards in 7 plays leading to another Kaeding field goal taking the game to half with the Chargers leading 20-0.
Early in the second half the Chiefs had their shots to get back in the game, the Chiefs pulled the score to 20-7 after a 8 play 65 yard drive that delivered a 7 yard touchdown pass from Matt Cassel to Dwayne Bowe. A reenergized Chiefs defense stopped the Chargers on three plays to get the Chiefs the ball back giving the Chiefs the chance to pull within a possession. On the first play of the ensuing Chiefs drive Matt Cassel heaved a deep pass intended for Jamal Charles who was wide open running down the sidelines had the pass been completed and not overthrown it would have been a sure six points instead it was overthrown. After that play the wind went completely out of the Chiefs sails and the drive would end up resulting in a three and out.
The next Chargers drive would be the back breaker for the Chiefs as Phillip Rivers found Darren Sproles on a 58 yard catch and run that put the Chargers up by 20 27-7. With the game well out of hand the Chargers keyed in on the Chiefs passing game and picked off Matt Cassel his first of three second half interceptions (Cassel had went four strit games without a pass being intercepted.). The Chargers would score their final touchdown on a Jacob Hester blocked punt early in the 4th and would later add a garbage time field goal to make the final score 37-7 the Chiefs worst defeat to the Chargers ever in their 50 year history. The Chiefs officially lost all positive momentum they had going from the Washington game and will have a long time to stew over this loss as the Chiefs enter the bye week. Two things the Chiefs will have to correct over their break is their pass defense and finding five guys who can protect Matt Cassel long enough to throw a pass or it will continue to be a long season for the Chiefs.
Grading the keys to the game
1. Keep the Chargers down: Boy did the Chiefs ever miss the boat on this one everyone got healthy against the Chiefs, L.T. had one of his best games of the year and his longest run of the season, Vincent Jackson had two catches over 50 yards, even the Chargers defense had to feel good about their selves with three interceptions and four sacks while only giving up seven points. This was definitely one of the Chiefs worst executed and played games of the year by far.
Grade: F-
2. Expose the defense: The only defense that got exposed on Sunday was the Chiefs, the Chargers had their best performance of the season , 3 picks, four sacks, 7 points allowed, 82 yards allowed passing. The Chargers could not have asked for their defense to play any better, to make matters worse Matt Cassel missed several open receivers taking away any chance to put any kind of fear in the Chargers defense.
Grade: F-
3. Frustrate Phillip Rivers: The Chiefs did not get any where near frustrating Rivers who usually plays some of his worst games against the Chiefs. Rivers completed 60% of his passes, threw for 268 yards, completed three passes over 50 yards and threw three touchdowns. The Chiefs secondary got burnt all day long at the hands of Rivers in what was maybe the worst performance by the Chiefs secondary this year.
Grade: F-
