Chiefs Vs. Steelers Pre Game Gab

chiefs 3 Two weeks ago the match up between the Chiefs and Steelers looked like a David versus Goliath, if it is possible this match up may have gotten worse for the Chiefs. Last week the Steelers lost to the Bengals in a game for first place in the AFC North and are sure to come in to Arrowhead motivated to get back in the win column the Chiefs on the other hand lost their best receiver and quite possibly their best player in Dwayne Bowe for four games for violating the leagues banned substance policy (most likely a diuretic). Already having to deal with the release of Larry Johnson the Chiefs offense which was just starting to develop a consistency will have to find a way to replace one of it’s main pieces for second time in three weeks.

The loss of Bowe will most certainty magnify the gap in talent on the roster between the Steelers and Chiefs. The Chiefs have been pulling free agent cast away players of the streets all season desperately trying to find playing who can fill the glaring holes on this team. The Steelers on the other hand are the Chiefs polar opposite and are exactly what the Chiefs hope to become some day, 17 of Pittsburgh’s 22 starters were drafter by the Steelers and 31 of the 53 players on the active rooster were drafted by the Steelers. In fact the Steelers drafts have been so precise in their drafting that the only first round pick in the past nine drafts that hasn’t worked out and is not on the teams roster is guard Kendall Simmons.

The Chiefs will have to be creative when trying to replace Bowe for the next four weeks and one option will be Lance Long, Long has caught just as many passes as Bowe (12) over the past three games despite being targeted only 21 times compared to Bowe’s 26. Along with a solid pair of hands Long also brings some physical measurements to the table, at his pro day he ran 4.35 40 time which would have been the fastest at the combine that year as well as having the fastest shuttle time in addition Long also has NBA level leaping ability. After admitting to making a attempt to run Lance Long of the team last season in training camp for the Cardinals coach Todd Haley said he soon realized Long was not going anywhere and has also been quoted as saying Long definitely bring “a unique skill set to the game”. With Bowe’s suspension the door is wide open for Long to step up and show what he can do.

Keys to the Game

1. Make the Steelers beat you on the ground: That may sound funny considering the Steelers are best known for being a tough hard nosed football team who beats you with a good defense a powerful running game but this is not your dad’s Steelers team. As QB Ben Roethlisberger game has grown during his career his role in the offense has also grown, the Steelers are still able to un the ball but they are now more of a spread you out and throw it kind of team and they are very good at it with receivers Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes and sure handed tight end Heath Miller just to name a few. The Chiefs may just be picking their poison here but as long as the can keep Big Ben from slinging the ball all over the field on them they may have a chance.

2. Keep Charles in Charge: The Chiefs needed Charles in a big way last week and Charles did not disappoint rushing for over 100 yards versus the Raiders and breaking off a 44 yard touchdown run on fourth down which proved to be the difference in the game. This week Charles may lose some of his carries to RB Kolby Smith but the Chiefs will still need Charles’s big play potential if they are going to have any sot in this one. Also look for Charles to be more involved in the passing game this week.

3.Don’t abandon the vertical game: Over the past two weeks the Chiefs have found success with the vertical passing over the past two weeks with Chris Chambers and Dwayne Bowe and just because Dwayne Bowe will not be part of this week’s festivities the Chiefs should not abandon the passing game. The Chiefs need to take advantage of the fact Troy Polamalu will miss this weeks contest and find a way to feature the speedy Lance Long and Jamaal Charles to pick up the slack.

Final Score: Steelers 31 Chiefs 13

Last time the Chiefs faced the Steelers after a loss was 2006 and the Steelers were victorious 45-7 after accumulated a early 31-0 lead. I don’t see the Chiefs having much better luck this week the Steelers will be highly motivated after losing their first place lead to the Bengals last week. Bottom line the Steelers are vastly more talented team all the way across the board and the Chief swill struggle to keep up.
