My “Beloved Chiefs Hall of Fame” – #5

It’s slow in the world of NFL (and specifically Chiefs) news – can you tell? So, I thought I would go over my top 5 most loved Chiefs, and later (and this one will be much more cathartic) my most hated Chiefs of all time. This doesn’t mean they were the best (as evidence by the first post here) – but they held a special place in my heart for one reason or another. Without further adieu…

Greg ManuskyLB/Special Teams savant

God, I loved this guy. Honestly, I know absolutely nothing about him. I have no idea where he went to college (Colgate – I looked it up), or what he’s doing now (San Franciso 49ers defensive coordinator). But what I do know is this – he was an absolute beast on kick and punt coverage. He turned Rod Smith inside-out during one game that I had the privilege of attending – he hit Rod-zilla so hard, Smith did the infamous “take four steps to show you’re okay, then collapse to one knee” routine. It wasn’t a special teams play – it was a crime scene.

From there, Manusky evolved (almost by default due to injury) into a serviceable starting linebacker for the Chiefs. He became like Lattimer from “The Program” – head-butting guys, screaming at them on the field, motivating them. He knew his role, he didn’t bitch about playing time – he just did his job. That’s the kind of guy I want on my team. I miss Manusky – we could use a few guys like him on this team right now.

I could see Mike Vrabel filling in this role right now, but Vrabel seems more like a rental right now – most Chiefs fans know he won’t be here after 2011.  What’s even stranger is that Manusky was the same way – he had already played five years with the Redskins and Vikings, but when he came to Kansas City, it was like he was one of our own.  It’s the reverse Johnny Damon effect – Damon was once beloved by the Kansas City faithful, but you would be hard-pressed to find ANYONE outside of KC who remembers that (including Damon himself – it’s like he gave himself a “Men in Black” mind wipe about his time here).  Manusky became one of us – and for that, he makes this list.
