Chiefs Should Make Charles the Workhorse of the Offense

Abe Brown of Football News Now writes today that the Chiefs need to give more carries in 2011 to running back Jamaal Charles, and make him the workhorse of the teams offense.

While it’s still unclear (at least publicly) who will be calling the offensive plays this season for the Kansas City Chiefs, one thing is very clear, running back Jamaal Charles needs more carries.

Sure, it’s a fair assessment to say any criticism of last year’s number one rushing offense in the NFL is an unfair assessment. But to have Charles be almost even again this year with Thomas Jones in rushing attempts would be…odd.

Actually, Charles had 15 fewer carries than Jones, yet remarkably managed to outgain him 1467 yards to 896. Breaking down Charles’ individual carries, Pro Football Focus discovered the Pro Bowl RB got positive yardage on 89% of his runs with nearly half of them going for at least 5 yards. Taking all of his numbers into account, Pro Football Focus has Charles as their highest rated rusher.

It shouldn’t be a surprise considering Charles put together a historic year in 2010 as one of only four NFL running backs to ever have a season with over 200 carries and over 6 yards per carry. The others are Jim Brown, O.J. Simpson, and Barry Sanders.

Meanwhile, the lowest rated rusher in the league, according to Pro Football Focus? Thomas Jones.
