Chiefs Had Better Regroup and Forget About Sunday’s Opener

If your scoring from home, count Chiefs coach Todd Haley as getting knocked down for an 8-count Sunday in the Chiefs 41-7 opening day home loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The Chiefs were the surprise team in the NFL a season ago, but Sunday at home they were surprised by the aggressive Bills attack that piled up 364 yards compared to just 213 for the Chiefs.

“It’s the coach’s job to have the team ready to go and we weren’t ready,’’ Haley said. “I’m taking 100 percent responsibility for our team not being ready to go. You can point the finger right at Todd Haley. That being said … I believe in my team and I believe we have a chance to do special things.”

There was little to nothing special about how the Chiefs played Sunday, and now it will test the meddle of Haley to see how fast he can get this young team to bounce back.

Sunday’s blowout was the worst opening-day loss in the 52-year history of the franchise, which is quite a statement given the many lean years Chiefs fans have suffered through at various times in the team’s existence.

The bounce back of the Chiefs will have to start on the sideline with Haley, and under center with QB Matt Cassel. Sunday he was terrible as well Sunday, going 22-for-36 for 119 yards. He threw a pick and a TD, but overall did nothing to motivate or inspire.

Looking at the schedule, you may think next week could be a cakewalk, but don’t overlook the Detroit Lions, who topped the Tampa Bay Bucs Sunday in Tampa.

“We’ve got to have a better plan across the board,” Haley said. “We need a better game plan offensively, defensively and on special teams because there’s not one you can look at and get real excited about.’’

They had better get a plan – and quick – or this team will be staring down the barrel of an 0-2 gun next Sunday.
