Chiefs Awful Again; Fall to Lions 48-3 to Fall to 0-2

Last season the Chiefs surprised the Chargers and Browns with two wins to start the season. This year, the surprise is just how bad the season has started after back-to-back blowout losses to the Bills and now Lions.

Sunday in Detroit the Lions roared with intensity as the Chiefs were no match for Matthew Stafford and the Lions offensive attack, as KC lost badly 48-3.

In the two games to start the season, the Chiefs have been outscored 89-10, being beaten by the Bills 41-7 and now the Lions 48-3.

Stafford exploited the Chiefs secondary, going to favorite target Calvin Johnson for two of his four touchdown passes. He ended the day with 294 yards on 23-for-39 passing.

He had two other touchdowns, one to TE Tony Scheffler, and another to running back Jahvid Best, who also ran for 57 yards and went over the pile for a rushing TD that made it 41-3 with 11:31 to play.

The Chiefs were outgained 411 to 267, and Matt Cassel was just 15-for-22 for 133 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions. He was replaced with the game out of hand by Tyler Palko.

Kansas City lost leading rusher Jamaal Charles with a knee injury just two carries into the game. He was carted off the field and didn’t return. He had 27 yards in his short time in the game after slipping on the yard marker going out of bounds.

Detroit had 21 first downs to 12 for the Chiefs, and Kansas City was just 2-for-11 on third down conversions. The Lions also had the ball longer – 32:24 to 27:36.

Stafford, who threw three scores last week, was efficient again as he was helped out by a defense that caused six turnovers, including takeaways on three straight Chiefs possessions in the third and fourth quarters.

It will be up to Todd Haley to find a way to get this Chiefs team turned back around.

They simply have been outplayed and outhit for the first two games, and now with a home game against the Chargers on the road next week, the season could be slipping away before it really gets going.
