Are The Chiefs The Team Ready To Deal For Niners QB Smith?

Alex Smith

News has hit through the NFL Combine like wildfire that the NFC Champion Niners have a deal in place to move former first overall pick QB Alex Smith.

The news has also hit that it looks like it’s the Chiefs are the trading partner for Smith.

There’s been no word as to what the Chiefs could have to give up for Smith, but it’s a given that it’s some sort of package that involves draft picks.

Getting Smith would mean the likely end for the Matt Cassel era at QB for the Chiefs, and also it means that the first overall pick in the 2013 Draft won’t be a signal caller.

Smith is currently signed with the 49ers through the 2014 NFL season. This season he’s set to make a base salary of $7.5 million plus a $1 million roster bonus if he’s still with the team at the turn of the new league year.

The deal for Smith can’t be finalized until March 12th, which is when the new NFL year starts. If it’s true that it’s the Chiefs, it’s the first huge move of the Andy Reid Era.
