Chiefs Hang On To Fourth Quarter Lead; Top Steelers 23-13

Pittsburgh Steelers at Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs defense played their best game of the year Sunday, stopping Steelers QB Landry Jones and forcing three turnovers from the backup QB, topping the Steelers 23-13.

The win is just the second of the season for the Chiefs, and their first since opening day for coach Andy Reid.

Kansas City’s win came after their had to hang on in the fourth quarter after the Steelers rallied from down 16-3 to close it to 16-13.

Down 16-10 the Steelers defense held the Chiefs and got the ball back with the hopes of taking the lead. Instead, after they got to the Chiefs 13 on a long Le’Veon Bell run, they had to settle for a Chris Boswell field goal to draw it to 16-13.

It was the end of any hopes for the Steelers, as the Chiefs hit two huge plays on the next drive to put the game away.

The first was a third-down conversion when Smith hit tight end Travis Kelce with a 26-yard gain on 3rd-and-4 to give them a key first down.

Then on the next play Charcandrick West went 36 yards to put the ball to the Steelers 16. Alex Smith hit Chris Conley with a 6-yard touchdown to put the game away.

“Not much different than the other two games, to be honest,” Smith said of the losses to Denver and Chicago.

“A little bit I think we just made plays down the stretch. That was the bottom line. Staying aggressive in all three facets of the game.”

Smith had a solid day, going for 251 yards, while West added 110 yards rushing and his first career TD as the Chiefs (2-5) finally earned a celebration in their home locker room.

“This is something we’ve been working toward,” said Eric Berry,.

The Chiefs played the Steelers offense tough, though they did allow running back LeVeon Bell 121 yards. Antonio Brown had six catches for 124 yards, while Martavis Bryant caught his 11th touchdown pass in 12 career games.

It was all for not, as finally the Chiefs were able to close out a tough win.

“We didn’t let off the accelerator for four quarters,” Reid said. “I thought that was important.”
