Chiefs QB Pat Mahomes Dealing with an Ankle Injury

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is dealing with a “legit” ankle injury according to James Palmer of NFL Network.

Palmer said the quarterback’s ankle ailment, an injury he picked up in Week 1 and later aggravated against the Colts in Week 5, is “probably worse than most people think it is.”

That could explain his relative lack of production the past few games-although he is still on pace to break the league’s single season passing yards record. Palmer noted that opponents have emphasized man coverage schemes against the hobbled MVP, who has been reluctant to abandon the pocket throughout his injury.

Despite the injury, Mahomes has missed only nine offensive snaps this season and none since Week 1. His “relative” lack of production can also be blamed on the Chiefs defense, which is mediocre at best and is now missing its best pass rusher in Chris Jones.

In the Chiefs consecutive home losses to the Colts and Texans, the opposing team was able to dominate time of possession because the Chiefs couldn’t stop them.

If Mahomes can’t get the ball, he can’t produce. Look for all of the Chiefs’ upcoming opponents, starting with the Denver Broncos Thursday night, to use that run-heavy approach to keep Mahomes off the field.

And if head coach Andy Reid and Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo don’t quickly figure out a way to stop this trend, the Chiefs’ Super Bowl dreams are toast. No matter how great Mahomes is.
