Chiefs QB Pat Mahomes Sustains Knee Injury; Team Awaiting Test Results

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

For the Kansas City Chiefs and their fans, Thursday was going just swell as they built a big lead against the rival Denver Broncos in Denver.

Then, as quick as a snap of a finger, the season went up in a flame of doubt. Just like playing the Rhode Island Lottery, the unknown as to the future of their biggest and best player is looming on everyone.

The reason? Simple – a knee injury to NFL MVP and leading quarterback Pat Mahomes. The injury sidelined him after surging for a first down in the second quarter of the eventual 30-6 win.

Mahomes limped off the field and, within minutes, was ruled out for the remainder of the game. For now, it’s being called a ‘right knee injury,’ and the timetable if it will be a few weeks or much longer for him to be out is very much up in the air.

It’s been a tough season for Mahomes, who at 24 won the MVP last February. He’s been battling a left ankle injury he sustained in the season opener and aggravated in Sunday’s loss at home to Houston.

So while it was a good night on the field for the team, now the fans and organization will hold their breath while they await more results on the most important knee in the history of the team.

The play in which Mahomes got injured took place as he was going for a quarterback sneak during the eventual 30-6 win.

You’d have to wonder if moving forward the Chiefs are going to have to do more and take better care of their franchise quarterback.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport says that the MRI is going to go a long way to figuring out the long term future of the Chiefs season.

“Those are the facts of what we know right now. He’s also going to get an MRI later [Friday] to determine ligament damage,” Rapoport said.

“It looked like a dire situation on the field, as bad as it could be. Pretty quickly there after, though, optimism came. I talked to several people involved in this situation. The view right now is that Patrick Mahomes is expected to miss about three weeks, pending the results of the MRI. If the MRI comes in and shows that there’s severe ligament damage, obviously it could be more. Much more.

“No one knows for sure, but this was a telling response from a source in the know [Thursday] night…this was it, guys: ‘About as good as it could be.’ That right there tells you a lot about where the Chiefs and those associated with Patrick Mahomes are right now heading into the MRI [Friday].”
