Week Two Preview: Raiders Come to Town

Last Sunday the Kansas City Chiefs held their own with the powerful New England Patriots, losing 17-10 in Foxboro. Sunday they play their home opener vs West rival Oakland, a team they have owned over the years at home. The Raiders are looking to put week one behind them, as they were pummeled by the Broncos at home 41-14. They showed some sparks on offense, but their defense was beaten bad all night by Jay Cutler and the Denver offense.

Oakland has not had much success in KC, Since 1990, they’re 4-14 at Arrowhead Stadium against the Chiefs and 9-28 overall versus their AFC West archrival. They will look to again try to establish the run with Justin Fargas and rookie Darren McFadden, and hopefully QB JaMarcus Russell will continue to mature as the teams starter. The big thing though is the defense, which was burned all night. New CB DeAngelo Hall was awful, being beaten by rookie Eddie Royal more than a few times, and he also committed two personal fouls.

The Raiders committed 10 penalties, including five personal fouls in the loss. They need to play a lot more disciplined if they are going to beat the young Chiefs. Look for KC to run a steady dose of Larry Johnson, and with QB Brodie Croyle hurt, Damon Huard will look for Devard Darling, Will Franklin and number one WR Dwayne Bowe downfield vs the overmatched Raiders secondary.

These are two young teams trying to make a statement that they can be competitive. After one week, there is no doubt the Chiefs are ahead of the Raiders, and that is why they will move to 1-1 after this divisional matchup while the Raiders will still be looking for their first win of 2008.
