Would the Chiefs Entertain the Thought of Moving Gonzalez?

There is no question that the Chiefs are going nowhere fast in 2008, but could that ride be taken without one of their all-time best players? There is some question about tight end Tony Gonzalez ending his career elsewhere, wanting to play for a ring while he still has a few years left. That question if Gonzlaez would stay long-term with the Chiefs was brought up to him today in KC.

“Yeah. I definitely could, but I love being a Chief,” Gonzalez said Wednesday. “But if it was something where it was going to take three or four years or whatever before they get this thing right, I think it would be in their best interest to maybe see what they can get and send me off.

“But I love being a Chief and I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else at this point. At the end of this season, hopefully I don’t have to ask that. Hopefully we get this thing turned around. I’ve got a family now. I came here when I just turned 21, so this is home. That’s where I’m at right now with that.”

It would be tough to let go on Gonzlaez, who right now is the face of the franchise. Problem though is the Chiefs are awful, and there is no way this team is going to compete this year, and probably next year as well. Gonzalez is a class player, and deserves to play for a winner, and right now, that is not going to happen in KC.

So would the Chiefs actually move him? If they can get a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick for him, it would be worth considering. He’s being wasted as a Chief, and there is no doubt that he’s a future Hall of Famer that will enter Canton wearing red. He deserves better than ending his career losing a lot of games wearing red as a member of a rebuilding team in KC.
