Released Patriots QB Gutierrez Joins Cassel in K.C.

“The Chiefs claimed quarterback Matt Gutierrez off waivers from New England.” Adam Teicher Kansas City Star

Once again, Kansas City has proven to be a safe-haven for New England Patriots castaways. The Chiefs announced Wednesday evening the signing of ex-Patriot QB Matt Gutierrez. Gutierrez was with the Patriots and Chiefs QB Matt Cassel in both 2007 and 2008. Aside from raw potential, Gutierrez’s greatest asset at this point in time may simply be his relationship with Cassel.

The 2009 season, for both the Chiefs and Cassel will undoubtedly be one of growth, with possibly more downs than ups. The Chiefs are squarely faced with learning how to win once again, and this task could certainly take a toll on the Chiefs young starting QB. The familiarity shared between Cassel and Gutierrez might pay dividends through the long hard season ahead.

In the short haul, Gutierrez may prove to be a better “shirk” than passer, but in the long run, the Chiefs might have just have found another essential piece to the puzzle. At 6-4 230lbs., Gutierrez mirrors the stature of both Tom Brady (6-4 225) and Matt Cassel (6-4 230).

Gutierrez does have talent. Though unproven, he does seem to posses a comfort level for standing tall when in the pocket. During last pre-season, Gutierrez managed to put up some acceptable numbers and it appeared as if he might bump Cassel for the backup role.

The addition of Matt Gutierrez won’t get ESPN’s insider Chris Montensen to reroute his bus to River Falls Wisconsin, but it does add to the overall improvement of the Chiefs roster. And yes, Brodie Croyle and Tyler Thigpen should be looking over their shoulders.
